As we have prayed for each other’s families, we have become an unbelievably close-knit spiritual family. We have prayed for each other on our telephone prayer chains whenever a need suddenly surfaced or became desperate. We have listened as they shared, and we have prayed at board meetings and retreats. Our monthly prayer calendar has one or more intercessors assigned to pray specifically for whoever uses our books and tapes that day, and the rest of us pray for that intercessor.

For six years, Betty and her husband did not know the location of their daughter and her two young children. Through those long years, Betty sat at board meetings with a mother’s broken heart and amazing faith in God, and we prayed. We joined hundreds of fervent prayers of family and friends ascending to the throne of God on their behalf.

“God answered!” Betty wrote to me. “They were found in good health in a caring Christian community. God had kept them safely in His care and had provided for their needs above and beyond our expectations. She is now happily married to a Christian college professor. Her two children are with them and very happy in their lovely new home. They’ll be in Russia this fall on a Fulbright teaching opportunity. Ephesians 3:20–21!”

Not all problems were that serious. Most of them were the normal things that happen to all humans on our fallen planet—surgeries, wayward children, financial setbacks, broken relationships, and health problems. But all needed bearing one another’s burdens.

Not all ended in glorious victory. Many did, several are still ongoing, and a few were disappointments to our way of thinking—but not God’s. God never promised to make all our problems disappear or to give instant answers. But He did promise to give that awesome peace that the world cannot give and the assurance that He is in control and doing all things for our good. We learned the incredible joy of fitting into His perfect will for us and seeing how He was making finer gold of all of us, knowing what disaster would happen if we had our own seemingly good way we were asking for. And He has kept His promises!
